How hard is expert sudoku?

Expert puzzles get stuck where pairs and pointing can't help. To move on you need one of the bigger patterns: an X-Wing or Swordfish, a Skyscraper or 2-String Kite, an XY-Wing or W-Wing, an Empty Rectangle, a Unique Rectangle or Simple Coloring.

We grade every puzzle by the hardest step it needs, the way sudoku experts do: every grid on this page calls for at least one of these patterns, and none needs long chains or guessing. Each pattern has its own guide with a real example.

Tips for expert puzzles

  • Fill in every candidate before you start hunting. Auto-notes gives you a complete, accurate set in one tap.
  • Work in order of difficulty: singles, then pairs and pointing, then the bigger patterns. After each advanced step, go back to singles, because new ones often appear.
  • Look at one digit at a time across the whole grid. X-Wings, Skyscrapers and Kites are all patterns of a single digit's candidates.

Questions

Is expert sudoku the same as "extreme" or "very hard" sudoku?

Different sites use different names. Here, expert means the advanced patterns (fish, wings, single-digit patterns, colouring) that experts' graders call tough. Puzzles that need chains are on the extreme level.

Can every expert sudoku be solved without guessing?

Yes. Each one has exactly one solution and is graded by a logical solve, so there is always a path. It may just need a technique you haven't used before, and the hint button names it and links its guide.

Can I play expert sudoku with a friend?

Yes. "Play this with a friend" opens a multiplayer room at expert. Share the invite link and take it on together, or race each other in battle mode.
